Three Common Scenarios and How to Handle Them

The Cracked Molar That Will Not Quit
James, a truck driver from Ohio, ignored a sharp pain in his lower left molar for months. By the time he saw a dentist, the crack had reached the gumline. His options were a crown over a core build-up or extraction with an implant. He chose the crown route, paying roughly $700–$850 for a ceramic crown plus a $200–$500 core build-up. The total still landed under what an implant would have cost, and he kept his natural root.
The lesson is timing. A cracked tooth caught early can often be saved with a crown. Delayed treatment pushes you toward extraction, which then opens the door to implants or bridges — both pricier paths.
2. ### Missing Front Tooth and the Confidence Problem
Sarah, a 34-year-old teacher in Austin, lost a front tooth in a cycling accident. A flipper (temporary partial) worked for six months but made her self-conscious. Her dentist laid out three options: a three-unit bridge, a single implant, or a resin-bonded Maryland bridge. She chose the implant after learning it would not require filing down her healthy neighboring teeth. The total came to about $4,000–$5,500, spread over a year with a dental payment plan.
3. ## What Insurance Actually Covers
Most dental insurance plans categorize procedures into preventive, basic, and major. Preventive care (cleanings, exams) typically gets 100% coverage. Basic procedures (fillings, simple extractions) often receive 70-80% coverage. Major restorative work (crowns, bridges, implants) usually falls into the 50% coverage tier.
However, annual maximums cap your benefits—commonly at $1,000 to $2,000 per year. If your restoration costs $6,000, you might still pay $4,000 to $5,000 out of pocket even with insurance.
